Meet the Author with Mark Van Stone

Just a few days left to sign up for this Saturday's "Meet the Author" session with Mayan scholar and author Mark Van Stone.

Professor of Art History at Southwestern College in Southern California, Dr. Van Stone will discuss his latest book, the large and beautifully illustrated 2012: Science and Prophecy of the Ancient Maya, and answer your questions about Mayan prophecies, what the Maya actually said about 2012, the art and the glyphs of the Mayan Calendar, and more.

Alongside Kenneth Johnson and Dr. Robert Sitler, Dr. Van Stone is an incredibly accessible and knowledgeable expert on Mayan art, culture, and history. Don't miss this rare opportunity to speak directly with Dr. Van Stone about anything you've ever wanted to know about the Maya and their calendar culture.

Unlike previous "Meet the Author" sessions which carried a fixed registration fee, we are opening up this event to everyone on a donation basis, so you decide what you would like to contribute toward the event. Minimum donation is $1.

"Meet the Author" with Mark Van Stone takes place online via conference this Saturday, December 3, at 8am Pacific/11am Eastern/5pm Central European time. Call-in details will be emailed to you when you register.

How Does Mayan Compatibility Work?

And do I need my iPhone to access it?

Ever since the launch of the "My Mayan Match" mobile app a week ago, we've been receiving a lot of questions regarding a.) what the compatibility results mean and b.) if this information can be accessed any other way besides a smartphone or iPhone.

The compatibility matrix embedded in the sacred Tzolk'in calendar is indeed not easy to find. We've spent a fair amount of time researching it ourselves. The most concise, portable, easy-to-use format for this compatibility system is a mobile application, because you get the results right away. However, since not everyone has a smartphone, we are also going to make it available in print, so stay tuned for an announcement here in El Quetzal soon.

Regarding what the compatibility resuls mean, if a loved one or close friend comes up as "incompatible," do not lose heart! As with any other astrological system, each case is individual and you need to dive beneath the surface a bit. (This is why we built in a field for "additional information" when you save your Mayan matches in the app.) For example, you might have two people who come up as "incompatible": a really cantakerous coworker (which will make total sense!) and a current significant other.

How do you resolve this apparent contradiction?

In the Tzolk'in, "incompatibility" can mean a range of things. Anything from a relationship that works but you have to work at to gain a better understanding of the person, to a person who is so unlike you that you simply cannot have any sort of relationship with (and you're both ok with that). So in the app's "additional information" field, we recommend putting in notes to document your thoughts and observations about why a certain person is or is not compatible.

We will publish more tips and insights on MCP's mobile apps in future issues of El Quetzal.

My Mayan Match is built for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Android platform.
