The Trecena of 1 Muluc / Toj

1 Muluc / Toj — The Trecena of Harmony

A sign of harmony, balance, and equilibrium, Muluc, or Toj in K’iche’ Maya, embodies not only the power, freedom, and inner peace that these states of grace carry, but also all of the struggles and challenges we go through to achieve and maintain them in our lives. It is, in a word, the sign of karma, the sign of payment and the energy of the law of action and reaction that the concept of karma carries. A potent and highly charged sign, Muluc packs a powerful swell of energies that can sweep you off your feet at any moment. It has the unique distinction of being the nagual of two primal elements, Water and Fire, in its manifestation of rain and in its embodiment of the sacred fire in Maya fire ceremonies, respectively. It also represents offering, payment, fines, and debt; and signifies such emotionally heavy concepts as carnal pleasures, ill omens, child abuse and neglect, and spousal abuse. The animal totems of Muluc are the shark and the puma. In the Classical Maya tradition, it is associated with the cardinal direction East and the color red.

On Muluc days, the Maya give thanks for everything that has come into their lives, regardless of its moral value. On this day, we should acknowledge our karmic debt with humility and sincerity, and assert our intention to reconcile that debt by achieving balance and harmony in our lives. We should also express gratitude for all that is in balance and atone for any disequilibrium still remaining. This is a good day to settle, pay or reconcile debts in general, not just karmic: they may be financial, moral or personal.

This Trecena, strive to achieve complete and total balance, equilibrium, and harmony. Regardless of how close you actually get to this goal, it is the intention and the journey that bring the greatest benefit, for in setting these states of grace as your horizon, you open your soul to their healing, calming energies. This is, in fact, the secret path to resolving and balancing the karma you hold, whether it’s karma that you bring into this lifetime or that you have accumulated over the years. Resist the temptation to right wrongs done to you, teach someone “a lesson”, hold grudges, or pay someone back for unfair or unethical treatment or an act of malice. Remember that whoever has wronged you, has in fact built negative karma against themselves, typically in direct proportion and intensity to the act in question; therefore it is not necessary for you to expend effort in trying to balance the charges. In fact, you may generate your own negative karma if you do engage in some form of vengeance, thus producing an infinite loop of retaliation that ultimately serves no one.

Flow instead with a higher spiritual current: stay with the energy of forgiveness that the previous Trecena imparted to you, and continue to learn to forgive and let go, and release yourself from the binding, toxic energies of revenge and retribution. This is a powerful way to liberate yourself from the past and set a magnificent example for all who come into your sphere of influence. Not only will you humble and inspire those who’ve wronged you, but also possibly inspire others to follow the same path to harmony instead of submitting to retaliation.

Since Muluc is the nagual of both water and fire, two primal forces, it is a good practice throughout this Trecena to honor them both in some way: light a candle at the beginning or end—or both—of each of its thirteen days, meditate at sunrise when the light is brightest, take a relaxing bath, drink plenty of pure water.

If you are a Muluc by birth or nature, this Trecena will bring out your innate essence and resonate with your powerful currents of emotion and intelligence. You may have noticed throughout your life that your intensity, flexibility, and the ability to adapt to almost any situation or change at a moment’s notice, causes mistrust or misunderstanding in others who are not quite so adaptable or emotionally charged. If this is the case, you might use the energy of this Trecena to carve out channels of communication that you may not have tried before that will more easily and effectively reach your loved ones, friends, and colleagues.
