COLORING TEMPLATES FOR CHILDREN
In March 2014, "The Serpent and the Jaguar" author Birgitte Rasine was asked to do a presentation on the Mayan Tzolkin calendar for a local preschool. Unsure whether small children would be interested in something as complex as the Tzolkin, she decided to put together a package of coloring pages with the Tzolkin day signs and their names in Yucatec and K'iche' Maya. As an extra, she added the thirteen Aztec deities associated with the numbers (the same deities that are on the outer ring of our calendar wheel).
The children were immediately fascinated by the stories of the Maya day signs and their symbols and wanted to know what their own birth signs are. The boys especially were intrigued by the serpent and the jaguar glyphs.
Here's Birgitte with the little ones. (Note the two children in the lower right trying to read the daily energies in Birgitte's book!)
The experience so touched us that we decided to make these coloring pages available FREE to all school teachers and parents who want to teach their children about the Sacred Mayan Tzolkin calendar.
HOW TO REQUEST YOUR COLORING SET
All you have to do is email us and tell us your name, your school's name and town if you're a teacher, or just your name and the age of your child/ren if you're a parent (we don't need the names of your children). This information is for internal use only to confirm you are a parent or school teacher; it will never be published.
Upon receipt of your request, we will email you a PDF file that contains the full set of coloring pages, which you can print out at home or in your school, and use as many times as you want. (Please try to use recycled paper! Even better, if you're coloring at home, use the blank backs of loose printed pages you might have around the house... like those conference materials and powerpoint presentations that shouldn't have been printed out in the first place... reduce and reuse!) Please indicate whether you'd like the set of twenty Maya day signs, the thirteen Aztec deities, or both. Both are absolutely free.
Here's a sample page from the coloring set (the PDF we'll send you is watermark-free):
PERMITTED USES
The PDF is provided to you in good faith. That is, we will never go to your house to make sure you really are a parent, or to your school to confirm you really are a teacher.
We ask that you do not use these free materials for any sort of commercial purpose, or any purpose other than educational. And yes, the adults can color too!
Please note that by requesting and accepting these materials you abide by this request.
Enjoy, and feel free to tell us all about your coloring experiences! We will be happy to post your messages and photos here. Please note, however, we will blur the faces of any minors to protect their privacy.
